Job description

Position Summary

Provide professional customer service to the VA office by providing information to students regarding VA educational benefits and answering inquiries or concerns. Determine individuals' specific eligibility for type (chapter) of VA education benefits and assist students in the application process for appropriate chapter of VA education benefits. Assist with documentation and correspondence to the Department of Veteran Affairs relating to VA education benefits. This position reports to the TCC VA Certifying Official. 

Essential Functions

  • Assist the TCC Certifying Official Authority with approving and submitting documentation and correspondence to the Department of Veterans Affairs in matters relating to VA education benefits.

  • Advise students as to satisfactory progress within their declared program of study and to rules and regulations specific to VA education guidelines; coordinate with advisors, program and department chairs on current degree requirements.  Remain current on all State and federal regulations. 

  • Provide information to students eligible for, and receiving VA educational benefits. Answer inquiries concerning VA education benefits. Determine individuals' specific eligibility for type (chapter) of VA education benefits and assist students in the application process for appropriate chapter of VA education benefits.

  • Communicate to various Department of Veterans Affairs agencies through person-to-person, email, electronic Internet transmission, phone, fax, and written correspondence and documentation of information specific to VA Education Benefits program requirements.

  • Assist with directing the tasks of VA Work-Study Students.

  • Use all computer applications to include the student management system, word processing, database and spreadsheet software to develop and maintain necessary reports and correspondence as required for supervisor, Veterans Affairs Regional Processing Offices, and State Approving Agencies.

  • Interpret, review and develop program specific procedures, rules and regulations regarding VA education benefits and State and Institutional tuition waivers specific to eligible veterans and eligible dependents of veterans.

  • Attend state and regional trainings as necessary to remain current on policies, procedures, and regulations specific to VA education benefits and programs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Clerical and customer service experience.

  • Intermediate experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Experience working with diverse populations and with providing complex services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university.

  • One year experience in a college veterans' office or closely related field serving veterans

  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other student management system

Conditions of Employment

Terms of Employment

This is a part time hourly position scheduled to work varied hours during the weekday afternoons and early evenings, up to 16 hours per week. The salary is $15.00 per hour. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet department needs. A collective bargaining agreement exists and membership in the Washington Federation of State Employees or payment of a service fee may be available.
