The Alumni & Student Connections office supports each Lute in utilizing the PLU network to help make their visions a reality. The Career Advisor is responsible for providing career advising, career development, and support to all students and alumni. The Career Advisor also assists in cultivating and connecting students to opportunities for the expression of vocation after graduation from PLU in employment, service, and graduate school. This position reports to the Director of Career, Learning and Engagement.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Provide individual and group career advising and referrals to assist students with the career development process, including making informed and meaningful choices relative to career, vocation, academic and life planning.
- Cultivate and implement an emphasis on career development needs for all students and focused populations including PLU graduate students, alumni, Veterans, students with disabilities, and returning and non-traditional aged students.
- Provide career planning assistance through appointments with individuals, small group meetings, telephone, and online assistance.
- Provide information to students on career-related topics such as job opportunities, mentorship, recruiting trends, utilization of job search tools, interview preparation, offer evaluation, salary negotiation, graduate school planning, etc.
- Assist students and alumni develop resumes, cover letters, and all manner of job search skills.
- Provide direction for the Career Peer Educator Program; select, train and supervise the student Career Peer Educators.
- Assist with campus mentoring programs.
- Hold office hours in campus partner locations.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of career, vocation, and alumni focused programming, events, and learning experiences.
- Help facilitate career program’s day-of implementation, program assessment, program wrap-up reports, and other program planning tasks.
- Coach students to develop their professional network by assisting them with connections to alumni, and non-alumni employers.
- Develop and lead programs, classroom presentations, workshops and tabling at involvement/opportunities fairs and other campus events.
- Assist with assessment of learning outcomes, services, program evaluation and collection and compilation of information for reporting to key stakeholders and audiences.
- Cultivate partnerships and collaboration with PLU campus community and key partners such as the Wild Hope Center for Vocation and the Division of Student Life.
- Contribute to ideas for continuous improvement of services for connecting with students and encouraging utilization of services and engagement with learning opportunities.
- Serve on campus committees, task forces, and working groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of career advising topics including career exploration and decision-making, interest, skill, and work values identification/development, mentorship, job search, graduate/professional school, post-graduate service search, resume/curriculum vitae, cover letter, personal statement writing, interviewing, and other career topics.
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively use helping skills in individual career advising appointments.
- Proficient in use of Google products (GMail, Drive, Calendar) and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Skill in career management systems, and other career development/assessment software programs.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two years of job-related experience.
- Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check.
- Master’s degree in student affairs, educational administration, higher education, counseling, student development, or other related field.
- Experience with career advising/career development for students at four year college or university.
- Experience with career services related software.
- Experience interpreting career assessments with students, such as the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory.
