We are looking for candidates who possess strong communication skills, domain knowledge, and experience working in a supportive team-oriented environment, with mentorship and collaboration competencies.

Agency Mission: Ecology's mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations. 
Program Mission: The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) is the central provider of strategic and tactical support for the use of Information Technology (IT) within Ecology.  The mission of ITSO is to create and support useful technology services that adapt for the future and support Ecology's mission.

Unit Mission: The ITSO Water Quality Information Services Unit is specifically tasked with providing application architecture, development, implementation, and maintenance support for the Water Quality Program's systems.

What you will do in this position:
You will support the agency mission of protecting Washington's environment by effectively developing, implementing, and maintaining systems that support protection and restoration of Washington's waters.

This includes:

  • Providing leadership and consultation for medium to large-scale projects that integrate new technology and disparate information systems.

  • Using knowledge of technology to analyze and translate requirements so that those requirements can be accurately incorporated into IT systems to the satisfaction of the users, thus allowing them to accomplish the work of protecting Washington's environment.

  • Supporting and maintaining existing Water Quality information systems in order to ensure they continue to support Water Quality and agency needs in a secure and reliable manner. 

  • Providing training and mentorship to other Water Quality software engineers to advance their professional development and ensure consistent software development practices are followed in order to have applications that be maintained efficiently.

Required Qualifications:
An Associate's degree or higher in Computer Science or information technology OR completion of a two year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related program  


Two (2) years recent professional level experience in computer application development and maintenance of medium to large scale systems.


Four (4) years recent professional level experience in computer application development and maintenance. Experience includes but is not limited to analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining, and/or programming medium to large scale software applications.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor's degree with focus on programming/software development and/or engineering.

  • Four (4) years of information technology experience programming web-based software applications or developing information systems architecture using Microsoft development technologies such as C#/ASP.Net, SQL Server, and HTML5/JavaScript for mobile applications. At least two of the four years of experience should be within the last 4 years.

  • Professional experience in programming, maintenance and/or support work for moderate risk software applications and databases.
